Globe DIY

Wether it’s a Spinning Globe or a Plastic Toy, One of the best ways to make something your own is to paint it!

I love customizing all of the things around me, and when I saw a little World Globe at my local Dollar Store I knew it had a future at my fingertips… and lucky for me, I needed a Fun Gift for Mothers Day.

This whole project can be done for Under $10, and only took One Day to Complete!

Depending on where you source your materials - costs may vary.

Materials:

  • 2 Paint Brushes (One Small, One Medium)

  • Acrylic Paint (2 Colors, I chose Black and Gold)

  • Acrylic Varnish, Glossy

  • World Globe

  • Furniture Transfer Paper or Decorative Tissue Paper

  • White Pencil or Chalk

DIY Steps:

1. Using your Larger Sized Paint Brush, Paint the Entire “Ball” of the Globe in whatever Base Color of Acrylic Paint you chose, in my case this was Black. This should take about 15 minutes to dry, so apply additional coats of paint to completely cover what’s underneath, letting each coat dry in between.

2. Cut out the Flowers or Whatever Pattern you chose to Decorate your Globe with. If you decided to use Furniture Transfer Paper, do NOT peel the backing off before cutting out your shapes, cut though all of the layers of the film. If you are using Tissue Paper, be careful when cutting out your shapes not to wrinkle or tear them as you go.

3. Once you have all of the pieces you want to use cut out, it’s time to apply them to the globe. If you are using Transfer Paper, peel the backing off according to the instructions provided, and apply it to the globe in a layered collage pattern. If you are using tissue paper, you can either apply it to the globe while the paint underneath is still wet, to act as a glue for you, or use the Clear Acrylic Varnish as a type of ‘ModPodge’ Material to adhere it to the surface of your Globe. Once all of the Pattern has been applied and you are satisfied, apply One Coat of the Clear Acrylic Varnish over top of the entire Globe. Wait One to Two Hours for this to dry, Leave in a safe dry place.

4. Using your Smaller Paint Brush and the Gold (Or The second Color you Chose) write your Message or Greeting onto the Globe over top of your Paint and Pattern. Let this dry, and apply a Final Coat of Clear Acrylic Varnish to Protect and add Shine to your Custom Painted World Globe.

5. Display and enjoy!
